Thirty Years

Thirty years was a long time to be married to the same person.  For some people it might have felt like an eternity, or like a life sentence.  For Mara, however, it didn't feel like that at all.  In fact, most of the time, she could hardly believe that thirty years had past.  Despite gray hair and the occasional wrinkle, she and Leroy were the same people who had met on the Aphelion....only she hated him slightly less now.  That was perhaps an understatement.

It had been hard to get to know him at first, back in those Aphelion days.  He was boorish and gruff.  He owned at least his weight in weaponry, if not the combined weight of the entire crew.  He preferred to charge into a situation without thought or consideration, endangering himself and everyone around him, thoughtlessly.  He listened to this...Mara could only assume it was some type of music...that involved more screaming than actual musical notes.  And he was a deplorable dresser.

Now, well, he was pretty much the exact same, though Mara had been able to at least change his style of dress a little.  What had changed, was that she loved him; deeply and entirely and without question.  It had only taken on breakthrough, one fateful evening where he saved her from a would-be attacker (despite her defending herself best she could), that would get her to open up to him, and vice versa.  In a run down little apartment on Nar Shadda, of all places, when Mara was only twenty years old.

Of course, she hadn't been perfect.  Mara tended to be a bit of a rebel; leaving her family behind to travel the galaxy with a band of various miscreants, and even going as far as working in a skeezy Hutt owned strip joint after that tour ended heartbreakingly and abruptly.  She would have never gone back home, her real family, the crew, had scattered across the galaxy, lost and unknown.  Except Leroy.

It was possible in all those years that she was the only one who had been able to get away with calling him Leroy, instead of Ransom, without his temper exploding through the roof.  The thought, as fleeting as it was, still made her smile.  Out of all of the people she had known, he was the last person she would have ever expected to end up with.  For thirty years.  They had grown children, and a grandchild on the way, but still Mara hardly felt a day older than the day she married Ransom.

It was a good life, and a happy life, and she was content.  Until she noticed the grenades littered across the kitchen table.  Mara narrowed her eyes for a moment, then smirked before she took a cup of Kaf into the room where Leroy was working.  "Babe...I'm not entirely convinced that grenades are the best table decor in the world.  Tell me there is a reason?  There's a job, isn't there?"  And it had better have been a reason other than the fact that he just really, really liked grenades.

Thirty years was a long time for a marriage. He and Mara had officially grown old together. They had long traded small, grimy apartments on worlds like Nar Shaddaa for a beautiful apartment here on Coruscant. Even had a small hangar bay for his personal ship. It was one of the perks of his job as commander of the New Republic's Special Forces, a job which he loved, but he wasn't sure if the apartment was quite to their liking yet or not. Their children were now all out of the house, so it was finally once again just them living together.

He was tinkering with one of his rifles. As she well knew, being a weaponsmith was almost a second job for him, and it was something that relaxed him. Lately, he had the Chief of State on his back, questioning whether or not the Special Forces were needed in peace time. He had spent the past few months defending the beings under his command, and his own job, to a man who seemed hellbent on demolishing the remains of the Army that he began to destroy after Operation Shadow Hand thirteen years ago with the abolishment of the federal surface forces. The process was so stressful that he felt he had to take a month of leave.

The years had not been kind to him. He looked older than he was, with his hair largely either going grey or white already due to years of stress. He had made the decision to join the Rebellion in its earliest days, and been with it ever since. Mara came with him, serving in a support role. Their children were raised in Rebel bases. He had heard that their old Captain had joined the Rebellion too, but left following the devastating defeat of Rebel forces on Kor Almanas after a promising career in the Alliance Army. He had personally seen to the dismissal of the charges of desertion levied against the Captain, but was never able to track him down.

While he was busy before, becoming an Officer in the Special Forces seemed to consume him. They quickly became the primary fighting force in surface engagements against the Empire. It was a miracle he had lived this long, and the wear and tear showed. He couldn't give it up though; he had found his true calling, and he aimed to do his job until he could no longer do it; likely much to Mara's chagrin. The man once referred to as the "Toughest Bastard Outta' Hazard" in reference to his hometown on Dantooine, was now a government man. His friends from before and the crew on the Aphelion would likely think of it as a joke, and probably wouldn't be able to believe their eyes if he stood in front of them in uniform.

That was a life that he felt he had left behind a long time ago. The rural, country world was the definition of backwater, filled with hicks and rednecks who were unlucky enough to live on the world alongside the farmers who often barely put up with the general population. He had heard that a new Administrator was attempting to modernize the world, and he gave him all the support he could. His unique upbringing, being born on Dantooine and later raised on Coruscant led to a unique accent, a blend of drawl from Dantooine and a swing from Coruscant. Now, his accent was purely Coruscanti, but still in his subtle but rich baritone voice which many would call gruff.

It was that voice that laughed when she entered the room, still laughing when he took the cup of caf from her. "I was feeling a bit restless... thought maybe we could go out on the ship and have some fun while I'm on leave."

He gave her a kiss and a gentle, playful tap on her rear. "Sorry, love. I'll clean them up when I'm done."

"Who said that was for you?"  She asked as she took the cup back from him after he had a drink from it, and she sat it on the table.  Of course it was for him, she barely touched the stuff, unless it was a small drink from his cup on the rare occasion.  "So you want to go out on the ship and have some fun, huh?  We haven't had that brand of fun in quite some time, Leroy."  Mara commented as she put herself between him and the rifle, and even the kaf.  The woman swung her leg easily over his lap and settled down, straddling him, and facing him.

She loved his grey hair, and the deep wrinkles on each side of his eyes. It was distinguished, as she'd told him once, a comment that made him laugh.  Lafayette Ransom, distinguished?  Never in a million lightyears.  They rarely, if ever, argued, as those times had been hashed out in their younger years.  But she had seen what the rebellion and now the New Republic had done to him, and that was about their only point of contention any more.  She had enjoyed having him home all of the time since he started his month-long leave, so she would finally broach the subject that had been on her mind for several days.

“I think you should consider retiring.”  Mara said as she trailed her left hand idly through his soft hair, then down the back of his neck before she swept it forward and across his stubbled jaw.  “I’m not gonna say that you’re getting too old for this shit, Leroy….but you are.  And you’ve earned it.”  She said as she slid her arms around his neck tenderly.

It had been a long road, for sure, one that she well and truly would never have changed.  Even after everything they had been through, she wouldn’t change one bit of it.  Mara leaned forward and rested her head against his shoulder.  Unlike him, however, she had weathered the years fairly better.  Then again, Mara had always been a little vain, and colored her hair at the first sign of anything that remotely may have looked gray.

“Or at least consider taking a little more time off.  I’m worried about that old, withered heart in there.  I don’t want it to stop beating.”  She said as she rested one of her hands on his chest and curled her fingers into the fabric of his shirt.  There had really only been one time that Mara was concerned Leroy was going to have a heart attack; twenty-seven years previous when they were on Corellia (Was it Corellia? She couldn’t fully remember.), in the middle of a surprise fire fight, that she told him that she was pregnant the first time.  Yes, he had taught her how to shoot, and she wasn’t bad at it. She just was unused to situations quite so intense.  Sure, they had been in spots before, but nothing quite so violent, not yet anyway. He’d been nearly white as a ghost, and her admission had been accidental and out of fear and concern.  Having children had never previously been something she wanted, but when it happened, it changed her enough that she felt overly protective.

So perhaps it wasn’t his heart she was concerned for, but him in his entirety.  Like most people, she had heard of the Imperial Remnant unrest, and the fighting that was still happening across the galaxy.  But if Leroy insisted on going, she was at least going with him.  And when the time came, he would know he could not do anything to stop her.  She was stubborn like that and he knew it.

Of all the things that he loved about her, her playfulness was perhaps the one he loved the most. When she straddled him, he mind went to other things as he stopped what he was doing and placed his hands on her butt as she settled onto his lap. Her face had thinned and her hair was longer, but otherwise he was staring at the woman he fell in love with thirty-five years ago. He knew she dyed her hair, but in his opinion, she was free to do whatever she wanted in regards to his appearance. Her suggestion of his retirement came out of nowhere to him.

"I think I could take some more time off...," was all he could manage to get out.

He felt an off burning sensation across the back of his head and neck as he sat there. He may have even been blushing. It was first time that he could think of that she brought up his age. It wasn't that he was necessarily sensitive about it, but that he just never thought about it. He still thought of himself as the 27 year old merc that stole her heart away; not the old man she was now married to. Life had certainly gone a different direction from what he expected then. It was not honestly until the day he was promoted into his current position that he could even believe he would ever be such a person. For a long portion of his life, he thought he would be dead by now.

Here he was, with a free apartment on Coruscant and a beautiful wife with whom he had raised a family. He could have never seen this coming. He couldn't in the moment see himself retiring either. Not anytime soon.

"I think we may need to wait to talk about retirement...," he said, clearly watching his words carefully. Another moment that those who knew him from his previous life wouldn't believe even if they saw it.

"I just feel like my job isn't done. Like I'll be needed very soon by the New Republic, and I wouldn't trust anyone but myself in my position right now. There are too few veterans in the military's leadership now... Fey'lya's ran them all out. I will not sit by and enable what we fought so hard and risked everything for to go to waste."

Mara let out a low sigh and rested her forehead against his before she closed her eyes.  She had never really thought of herself as old, either, but she could see how hard things had been on him in recent years.  Sure, he was strong and healthy, and still undeniably attractive to her.  The more she thought of it, the more she realized her suggestion was a selfish one more than anything.  Mara hated, absolutely hated, when he was gone for days, weeks, or even months at a time.  Some wives would have been grateful for the alone time, but not her.  Moreover, she hated the worry that she felt, though if someone had asked her that years and years ago, she would never have guessed that she would end up feeling that way about him.

But she did.  She loved him so entirely that she knew she would die too if something happened.  "I'm tired of my job being sitting around here, alone, wondering if you are coming home this time or not, Leroy."  No, she'd never voiced that to him in all those years.  With their last child having just recently moved out, it was harder for her now.  She'd pretty much given up everything; her place in the rebellion (after a huge fight with Leroy about her being almost 6 months pregnant and almost getting caught by Imperials), then her place in the New Republic, so that she could raise their kids.

"And don't tell me to get a job or something, unless you want to sleep on the couch for the rest of your life."  She told him as she straightened up and smiled.  Of course she hadn't meant to blindside him the way she did, but it was time they discussed things like that and mapped out the rest of their lives.

He laughed at her couch comment, before taking his right hand and moving her head up so she could look into her now, hopefully, open eyes.

"I wasn't even going to dare... although opening another bar isn't a bad idea..."

When they first got together, he used his saved up credits from his previous work as a mercenary and bounty hunter to open a bar on Nar Shaddaa called The Helios Courtesan; shortly after being kicked off the Aphelion, along with the rest of the crew, by the Captain. She ran the bar, while he resumed his freelance career as a mercenary and bounty hunter. It was in that bar that their children were raised, the oldest three anyways, by the staff who were like a family to them. The staff ran the bar while they fought in the Galactic Civil War, having previously ran it while they rejoined the crew of the Aphelion. The entire time he ensured the security of the bar, making sure only those he trusted protected it. The Hutts, gangs, and Bounty Hunters Guild couldn't touch the place, and neither could the Empire. They sold the bar to the staff when they moved to Coruscant after its liberation by the New Republic.

Since then, when she resigned from the military to raise their children, Mara seemed both restless and content. It was as if she was yearning for the excitement of their earlier lives, but also happy doing nothing but being a mother. Now that their oldest was out on her own for a few weeks, the conundrum became even more pronounced. It was as if Mara no longer knew what to do, and he was at an honest loss as to how to help. So like any man, he ignored the issue and delved headfirst into work. Now that he was home, they would need to talk.

His retirement however was off the table, for now. Crix Madine, who died thirteen years ago, mentored him following the Battle of Endor, and showed him that he could have a life beyond being a mercenary and bounty hunter. He owed his family, his current status, everything, to Madine. When Madine died, he took over the Special Forces, and served as such ever since; feeling a sense of duty to the man's memory to ensure that the organization he molded into the galaxy's greatest fighting forces remained such, and at the hand of one of his pupils. Perhaps later he would be able to come around to the idea.

"So you have a month, maybe more, in which I am all yours. What shall we do?," he asked, enjoying looking into her beautiful eyes.

Mara watched her husband quietly for a moment.  While he wouldn't flat out refuse her request, he was dancing around her suggestion by offering to take a little extra time off.  It was very like him, and she understood that, but he obviously didn't understand how she was feeling or what she was going through.  Ultimately, she never expected him to understand, but she did hope.

"If you want to open another bar, open another bar."  She had no desire to do that, and the flat tone in her voice would have given it away.  It was good extra income, but she had spent enough time in seedy bars in the underlevels or Hutt controlled spaces in her life that she really did not want to go back to that life.  "But you'd have to retire to do that, and you won't, so..."  Mara shrugged and pulled herself gracefully out of his lap.

"The thing is..."  Mara paused, crossing her arms over her midsection as she stopped in front of one of the massive windows in their apartment.  "You've...we've...done our parts here.  The war is over.  Sure, you've always been the best at what you do, but what happens when you come across someone who is better than you?"  She asked, still looking out at the rather grey day.

Mara leaned against the window casement and ran her fingers through her sleek, raven hair briefly before she turned back around.  "Since the moment we met, we have always been running, fighting, or hiding from something or someone.  We never even went on a date, because the first night we got together, you were protecting me.  I just think..."  She paused again and sat back on his lap and slid her arms around his neck, lacing her fingers together behind his head.  "I want it to be Mara and Leroy for a bit.  Not Mara, Leroy and the Rebellion.  Not Mara, Leroy and their kids.  And not Mara, Leroy and the New Republic."  She wondered if he would get it and understand.  "So no...I don't know what I want to do while you're off, but it seems since it's the only time I am going to get out of you, we had better come up with something good."  Mara sighed, giving in reluctantly.

Tiberius Aurelius was a man who had a very long career in the military. He was one of the few Clone Wars veterans still serving in either galactic government. He was also still a controversial figure in some circle; at one being a member of the command staff of the Death Star, and later one of the first high profile Imperial defectors who in turn became the second Supreme Allied Commander of Fleet Command, being replaced by Ackbar. He, like Lafayette, felt a duty to serve; that the job was not done. The job would never be done, and that was the quagmire the two men found themselves in. It was actually a subject of constant conversation between the two who had become friends since the peace between the New Republic and the Remnant was established.

They were something of an odd couple. He, a former nobleman and at one time a Prince of his homeworld, and Lafayette, a former mercenary and bounty hunter who was still very much rough around the edges. He had seen most of his family murdered by the Empire, while his parents retired and later died in peace. He was only a few years older than Lafayette, but his children were about double in age when compared to that of Lafayette and Mara. He referred to him as Lafayette rather than Leroy as that was the professional name he was widely known as.

Moments after Mara sighed, there was a chime from their door. He would be standing at it, wearing not his typical clothing. Rather than a military uniform or business suit, he was wearing a black thermal long sleeved shirt, khaki cargo pants, brown jack boot style armored combat boots, with an empty dual pistol holster belt, fur lined brown leather jacket, and a small bag slung over his shoulder.

If only, Mara thought, she had dragged Leory to bed with her (not that it would have been difficult) instead of discussing his retirement, they either wouldn't have heard the doorbell, or would have just ignored it due to being indecent. Since she chose the latter, unfortunately, the bell rang loud and clear and she couldn't even grasp on to a minor excuse not to see who was on the other side.

"I'll get it, darling. Back to your tinkering." She murmured as she stood, then kissed him tenderly on the forehead before she walked away from him.  Mara had no idea that what she would find on the other side of the door would make her very unhappy indeed.

Once the door was open, Mara tried not to show her disappointment, and she was good at covering it up. "Tiberius." She said before she drew in a shallow breath. "It's lovely to see you. Please, come in." She stepped aside to allow him room to come inside, before she would close the door. "He's in his study...go on in.  I was just on my way out, so you won't be disturbed." She wasn't, actually, but she had no issue making herself scarce. How many shoe boxes would return with her, however, was yet to be seen.

"I don't want to open another bar...," he admitted, although free booze was a bit of a bonus.

He gently slapped his free hand, that is the one that had not remained on her butt, on the side of her thigh.

"Alright then, a date it is. We'll pick a day; you'll spend the day time in a spa getting relaxed and pampered, and then that night, we get dressed fancy and see what two old geezers like us can really do," he suggest with a smile.

The smile went away with the ringing of the bell. He followed after her, knowing exactly who was at the door. It was horribly bad timing, considering their conversation, and he was half tempted to blast the lock to the door before Mara opened it. It was not a serious consideration... at least, he didn't think it was. He walked up behind her, leaving her politely sandwiched between his body and Tiberius', although in truth about a meter space was given to her on each side.

"So, love... remember when you asked if there was a job, and kind of said yes?" Despite the large frame, muscular physique, tough tattoos, and intimidating beard, Leroy in that moment looked like a puppy that knew it did something bad.

Mara found very quickly that she was obviously not going anywhere, stuck between Leroy and Tiberius.  Though she did take a step back, and closer to Leroy out of sheer habit.  Then he spoke and her gaze iced significantly.  "So basically...that 'month, maybe more' leave that you said you had....is an absolute load of crap?" She asked, her gaze falling on her husband.  "And the grenades...I see.  Well..." Mara drew in a deep breath and squashed her emotions down deep inside herself.  She would never embarrass him in front of his colleague.

"I'll....go pack your bag."  Mara had gotten good at that, at least.  She whisked herself from between them and went down the hall to their bedroom and let the door slam shut behind her.  It was all the strength she had to keep from having an absolute meltdown, and usually she only let the tears flow after he was long, long gone, but she couldn't help it this time.  Once she pulled Leroy's bag out and laid it on the bed, it just happened.

She tried to calm down and convince herself that she could go and visit one of their children, but she couldn't, they all had their own lives.  Her sister was gone, her children all moved on their own and her husband was obsessed with work.  And furthermore, he'd just lied to her.  So needless to say, she was hurt and less than pleased at the moment.  His bag didn't end up getting packed, and instead was shoved off of the bed in a fit of anger, taking the bed comforter and half of the nightstand contents with it, and she sat on the floor with her back against the side of the bed as she tried to decide what she needed to do.

His forty-four years of marriage let him know exactly what was happening without needing to ask. He recognized an upset wife when he saw one, and felt no sympathy for Lafayette. He found it best to always assume the man was wrong in any marital dispute, even if he was right. Being right came later, after the argument, and whatever method was used to make-up. After she stormed off he exhaled sharply walking further into the apartment, and taking a seat at the grenade strewn table. He was an unexpected guest to Mara, and clearly entering in one an intense discussion.

"Do what you have to, I'll just wait here," he said to his friend once he was settled at the table.

He didn't lie to her. Not fully. At least he didn't think so. He could tell that she was upset, but he would have no idea it was truly something she would cry over. He was a ignorant of the strain his life had put on her. He always assumed that she enjoyed the adventures, the missions. He planned for her to come along on this mission, to relive the old times from before they had children. He figured it would be a good way to celebrate being free and independent again with the kids out of the house. Was he ever wrong.

He nodded to Tiberius before following Mara into their bedroom. He did not expect the sight he happened upon. He closed the door as gently as he had opened it, and came towards her. He bent down in front of her, afraid to touch her just yet.

"Mara... I am on leave. So is Tiberius. Ti and me were going on an unsanctioned mission on our own, and I was planning on you coming with us. Like the old times...," he said, his voice soft and whispered. With his first child being a daughter, he had quickly learned how to be gentle when necessary. Most of his old friend would have a complete laugh at this.

"And as soon as you seemed upset about things, I decided to take more time off so we could have the leave that you want to have. Look... I had no idea you felt this way. Things aren't ready yet for me to retire... I'm sorry, but that's the reality of the situation. I'll start planning for it to be ready. I promise you though, this thing with Ti, it isn't work... it's pleasure. Pleasure I thought you would want to be part of."

Mara wiped beneath her eyes quickly with her fingertips when she heard the door open.  Sure, Leroy had seen her cry before; when she was in labor (between cursing him and feeling like she was going to die because of the pain), when she found out her sister died (estranged as they were), when their eldest son told them they would be grandparents.  But never when she was angry with him, or upset over him leaving.

Before he crouched down in front of her, she made sure the tears were put away.  "You had no idea I felt this way because you've ignored it the past twenty five years."  Mara clenched her fist for a moment, before she relaxed. What she really wanted to do was punch him in the jaw, she was that hurt. She didn't punch him, but she did haul of and slap him fairly hard across the cheek.

"I'm sorry." She murmured before she looked away from him.  "It's just that....every single time I tried to talk to you about it, somehow, the topic got changed or pushed aside or...."  She sighed.  "Nevermind." There was no point in talking about it.  It was just a fact that she would have to deal with, silently.

"You guys go ahead, though.  I'm sure Tiberius wouldn't want me tagging along."  And she was fairly sure Leroy wouldn't really want her around for whatever they were doing anyway.  She wasn't exactly an asset most of the time.  In fact, last time she went anywhere with him, he ended up having to save her....again....

"No, you're right..." he said, without further clarification before he joined her in sitting on floor against the bed.

"I'm getting old. I can't keep living like we're in a rebellion anymore. I can't keep living like I'm young anymore. I've made it this far, and I need to make sure we actually grow old together."

He put his arm around her to comfort her, hoping it would not result in further thoughts of abuse on her part. He tried to be a good husband, he really did, but the man-child in him, what made him him for all the years, still won out on occasion to the voices of reason and responsibility. It was time to accept his status and begin to hand things off to the current generation. It was perhaps an ill of the New Republic, relying so much on the same group of people for nearly thirty years. Those that followed them were truly unprepared for their roles as many it seemed just fully expected their predecessors to be there. It was doubtless anyone thought of anyone but Ackbar serving as Supreme Commander for as long as he lived, but the peace, and Borsk Fey'lya's election, saw to proving that wrong.

"I'm sorry, too. It needs to no longer by myself dictating our relationship but us, living together."

He truly did want her to come though. He sincerely thought reliving their youth would perk Mara up. Clearly, he was proven wrong. Tiberius would understand, and hopefully find a new way to do the mission they had planned.
