Living is just the beginning

There was a time in Juliede's life when she thought that she could do anything.  She had always known that she was talented in the ways of the Force- her speed and reflexes were noted first, but she was more talented in manipulating and moving objects as time passed.  It was well controlled, this power, and she could meditate for hours; seeing visions, prophecies perhaps, or just dreams of what could and would be.  It was within herself and the earth that her power in the Force was strongest, though.  Her ability to sense emotion, her empathy, and the turn a sour mood bright were what made her feel that she was special.  It was then, as a teenager, that she realized doing everything was not necessarily for her- she had a lightsaber that she was sometimes clumsy with, and hand-to-hand fighting was not her forte.

Instead of spending time training in such things, she spent time in the greenhouses making things grow from the dark, rich soil.  Sometimes she taught yoga and meditation to Padawans.  And other times she spent alone, in the library or archives, or even auditing classes.  She wanted to travel the galaxy, but had yet to be assigned to somewhere exotic and new...or even mundane and boring.  But she was young, and while she was a knight, there was still time.

That day, a rainy afternoon, Jules sat in a gazebo, sheltered from the pelting rain that soaked the city.  She meditated, and wrote in a journal as she saw visions dance in vibrant colors in her mind, then she meditated again for hours on end.  She was content enough for the time being, but she was really ready for her adventure to begin.

The Jedi Headquarters rarely drew Jedi these days. Coruscant was a planet which for many was overwhelming for those just uncovering their abilities in the Force, and the Headquarters, built atop the ruins of the old Jedi Temple, were largely used more as an embassy than anything. It in fact held a delegation from the Chiss Ascendancy mere weeks ago. Jedi largely did not come due to lack of studying ability and the fact that the old Jedi Temple was still restricted to Master Skywalker and a select few others. Despite that, there were training facilities, as well as facilities for maintaining the grounds. Jedi Knight Starling was one of the few here on Coruscant for actual learning and instruction; part of a test project to explore the feasibility of opening an academy on the planet, potentially through renovating the old Jedi Temple.

He was strolling through the open grounds of the facility when he happened upon Starling. She was meditating, but he could feel that she was not entirely at ease. As he approached, he noticed that she was making noted on her visions as she meditated. An interesting technique, one that he had not seen before. He was curious if this was why she did not feel at ease or if it was something more. He observed her from a far for a moment, and when she broke to write in the journal again, he approached.

"Greetings, Jedi Starling. I don't believe we have met. My name is Jak Daine; I'm currently running security for the Headquarters until Master Katarn can return. If you don't mind me asking, what is it that you are doing?"

Juliede slowly looked up with her dark, kohl rimmed cobalt hued eyes. "One might ask you the same, Mr. Daine. Do you frequently walk the grounds in the pouring rain?"  She closed the journal on her lap and sat it aside. With a sigh. She did answer his question. "Meditating and writing. I find it comforting in my solace here. It is easier to interpret ones visions if one looks on gem with fresh eyes at a later point." It made sense, as there could have been something missed in the throes of a vision.

She wore a thick, natural colored wool wrap over her bare shoulders, covering tattoos and her traditional clothing from her homeworld. Her hair was in long, dark braids and twists, that fell near to her waist. Jules stood, finding herself at least eye level with the man.  "Is there something that I can assist you with today, Mr. Daine? Or were you truly just introducing yourself?"

"I do, actually..." he said, in response to walking the grounds in the rain.

"I've always had an affinity for the rain. Besides, it reminds me of home. I grew up in Coronet City, on Corellia. It rains often there."

After the justification, he observed her for a moment. Even among the New Jedi, she seemed to lean towards the unorthodox, which he appreciated. He nodded as she spoke. He personally took on his visions, when he did have them, as they came rather than her process, but he was not about to critique her process or voice an opinion on it; he merely listened as she briefly explained.

"Partly introducing myself. Also trying to meet what few Jedi are here on Coruscant. I've only been here for a week so I haven't had much time to get to know those I'll be working with."

Juliede took her time and tucked the battered leather journal into her bag, which she slung over her shoulder. "Please do not take offense, but I am hoping to be assigned somewhere soon. It is nice here, but....it feels so...." She glanced up at the towering skylines around them. "It feels....claustrophobic."  She admitted.

"It is nice to meet you, however. If there is anything that I can offer my assistance with, please do not hesitate to ask. If you have only been here a week, I am sure it can be overwhelming."

"I agree. Even growing up in a big city like Coronet, the Galactic City is still an overwhelming place. To be honest, I haven't been here much in my life. This is probably the longest I've ever been here at one time."

He paused for a moment at her last comment.

"Well, since you mentioned it, there is something I could use some help on... but I'm unsure who around here would be willing or able to. If you don't mind, could you tell me some of your experiences?"

It was an odd question to be sure, but one with reason and purpose.

She hesitated for a brief moment.  "I spent my life before training on Eriadu, my homeworld.  After I was finished training, I spent a good deal of time on Clak'dor VII, teaching Bith children how to garden, and bring life to their land."  Jules said quietly as she folded her hands together in front of her. "I know that it is not exciting, but....it was fulfilling.  Then I came here to see what I could do, but it seems that there is nothing...for now, at least."

"I was hoping that I would have a vision....but I cannot breathe here."

"Well, at least I might be able to give you something to do," he said to her.

He was wearing his 'street clothes' of pants boots, shirt and jacket. The jacket was currently missing, as his thermal shirt kept him too warm with the humidity of the rain. From one of the pouches of his cargo pants, he pulled out a small datapad, which he handed to her.

"The People's Inquest. It's a Jedi watchdog group. They were active during the Old Republic, and are resuming their operations. The cell, for lack of a better term, here on Coruscant attempted to kidnap an Apprentice yesterday. I'm investigating them and could use a partner to help."

The datapad he handed her had information on the People's Inquest, both the current incarnation and the past group from the Old Republic days. She may not have much experience, but she was nonetheless a Jedi, and it would be helpful for him to have an outside perspective through the investigation.

She took the datapad gingerly and looked at it for a moment, before she glanced back to Jak.  It was not obvious that she was uncertain about his proposition, but she was.  It seemed very...well, she had never done anything quite like it.  Though, after he finished speaking, she scanned through the information (not nearly all of it) on the datapad for several awkwardly silent moments.

"I am not sure that I understand why someone would want to kidnap an apprentice."  She finally said as she offered the device back to the man.  Of course, she had not had the time to read through ALL of that information, so she was looking to him for the highlights for the moment.  "And are you sure that you would not like someone more experienced?  This is not usually....what I do."
